What could be a more direct expression than painting? I think about the Lascaux caves and that the first written communication was pictures. How in the abstract all language is pictures win translation.
Picture making is a deep connection to the mysterious, and harnessing, summoning those impulses is quite a challenge. But every so often an image comes roaring forward like the animals on the cave walls, and you know that you have stumbled upon something rich. A vein that is something to mine. Alas, it’s not so easy. The spirits are vapors and they do not welcome exposure.
That’s the quest. And the fun.

Today, there is no artist that compares to Anselm Keifer. His peerless achievements are in every way, inconceivable. But for us mere mortals, we take what we can from him. For me it’s the tactility, the ancientness, the thing as relic - something venerable, a vestige. With these three paintings, I think I got to some approximation of that expression. Because these are on Arches, they are sturdy, but also fragile: A lovely combination that was exposed through the process of making them.
